Hit of The Week: Of Montreal “It’s different for girls”

Instead of looking back, alt-rock band of Montreal are focusing on the present, both in sound and in subject matter, for its next LP. The group will release their 14th album, Innocence Reaches, on Aug. 12.

Innocence Reaches draws from more contemporary influences to combine the fantastic and reality. Frontman Kevin Barnes transitioned from analyzing the Beach Boys and the Beatles to absorbing the likes of Jack Ü, Chairlift and Arca, according to a press release.

The band released the second track off its upcoming work. “it’s different for girls” lays a groovy, bass-heavy undercurrent while the lyrics scrutinize sexism and the gender binary. The modern psychedelic track explores how from childhood, girls are “depersonalized” and “aggressively objectified.”
