The muses of La Musa: Laura Mvula

Birmingham-born artist Laura Mvula grew up loving Michael Jackson, Earth, Wind and Fire and singing in her auntie’s a cappella choir. Her thrilling and tender gospel pop has been nominated twice for the Mercury Prize, first for her debut album Sing Me To The Moon (2013) then for its follow up, The Dreaming Room (2016). A third, much anticipated album, Pink Noise, was released in July. Packed with 1980s-styled power pop bangers like Church Girl and Safe Passage, it features fierce synth lines and a touch of Grace Jones’s angular sensuality.

Hers has always been a strong, soulful voice and she has developed an increasingly confident and unique aesthetic throughout the years – both sonically and visually.
