Hit of the week: Hot Chip “Hungry Child”

Hot Chip have announced a new album, called A Bath Full Of Ecstasy, that will be out in June. It’s their first album since 2015’s Why Make Sense?, and it’s their first album that they recruited outside producers to work with them, namely Philippe Zdar (Cassius, Phoenix) and Rodaidh McDonald (the XX, David Byrne, Sampha).

They’ve dropped a music video for lead single “Hungry Child,” which was directed by Saman Kesh and stars Freaks And Geeks’ Martin Starr and This Is Us’ Milana Vayntrub as a couple having a spat before getting entranced by the new Hot Chip single. It turns out that “Hungry Child” has taken over the whole world, and no one can stop hearing it.

Divus Julius presents…Roosevelt

Blending disco, funk and soul with flowing pop melodies and hints of sugary Balearic music? Double tick. Doing this live in organic formation (with drums, guitars and keyboards) while totally focused on the dance floor? Two blue ticks.

The German artist Marius Lauber a.k.a. Roosevelt has spent his whole life collecting ticks at each step he takes. Before starting his own project he was already resident at the Kompakt Total Confusion night together with Superpitcher and Michael Mayer, but he soon discovered the glory of pop. With it he convinced the Greco-Roman label (co-founded by Joe Goddard of Hot Chip) to release that refreshing sip of iced tea, ie his debut EP, Elliot, in 2013. Three years later, now on City Slang, came his homonymous LP, that is from beginning to end like a delightful boat trip, underpinned by melodic nocturnal breezes, warm waves of synthesisers and rhythms that guarantee total stability.

With his second album, Young Romance, released last year, Roosevelt has reinforced his position in the first division of this genre that includes big names such as Hot Chip, Caribou and Metronomy. Marius Lauber’s band will give us the golden opportunity to get on board tonight at Razzmatazz 2,

Divus Julius presents…Teleman

Teleman have always stood apart because of their constant desire to have fun. Signed to Moshi Moshi in 2012, the four-piece return with a third album that continues this fine tradition.

While they’ve always dabbled, ‘Family of Aliens’ is the band’s first out-and-out dance record. ‘Cactus’ recalls Hot Chip at their pomp, its driving bass line underlying the track – while there are some exquisite psychedelic touches that feel like they’re straight out of a sci-fi disco. ‘Submarine Life’, meanwhile, reveals them at their weird and wonderful best, and could reasonably pass as a track left off ‘Random Access Memories’. Tonight in concert at Razzmatazz.

Music by Bergman: Pictish Trail

The Pictish Trail aka Scottish singer-songwriter Johnny Lynch’s eloquent songs are as wildly varied as his selection of brightly coloured bobble hats and have seen him get mentioned in the same breath as his heroes Beck, The Beta Band and Hot Chip. His extraordinary vocals reveal hidden depths and have been accompanied by everything from acoustic guitar to a full-on four piece metal band to throbbing dance beats and samples, and often during the course of the same gig. Future Echoes, the third album proper from the artist known to his Mum as Johnny Lynch, is undoubtedly his best yet.

Pardals: John Talabot

Over and Over”, “I Feel Better”, “Ready For The Floor”, “One Night Stand” i molts d’altres).
