Simon Green, aka Bonobo, is one of the most widely played producers on the planet. He was a key catalyst in the downtempo electronica scene that rose up in the late 1990s, at the time when Air’s Moon Safari was in the Top 10 Charts.But he stood above the rest, and over a decade later, his jazz-inflicted, upbeat tempo has evolved since his Animal Magic album days.
On January 14, L.A.-based electronic artist Bonobo will share his seventh studio album Fragments. The project was announced this month with “Rosewood,” a groovy and orchestral deep house cut, and his latest track “Tides” takes things a little more pensive. Jamila Woods, the Chicago experimental soul musician behind 2019’s Legacy, Legacy, finds the ebb and flow of the beat immediately and delivers a gentle yet cathartic performance.
Marika Hackman has shared her take on Grimes‘ 2015 single ‘Realiti’, the first track from the singer’s forthcoming new album ‘Covers’. ‘Realiti’ is one of 10 songs that appear on Hackman’s new album. Elsewhere on the record are covers of songs by Radiohead, Air, Sharon Van Etten, Elliott Smith, Alvvays and Beyoncé, among others
There is no doubt that the French produce uncharacteristically beautiful music, but since the rise and plato of bands like Air and La Femme the market for electro-pop music has left a gapping hole in the French music industry. Since forming in 2015 the duo Agar Agar have created a catchy sound that resonates in the ears of international listeners. Producer Armand Bultheel layers synth minimal beats complimenting the sultry voice of Clara Cappagli, bringing life back into French electro pop.
Happy artists families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. Until Rest, this reference to a quote from Tolstoy had no relevance when talking about Charlotte Gainsbourg. Her childhood was blissfully free and very early on she demonstrated that she was a extremely talented actress and her solo records were marvellous pop caprices with illustrious Gainsbourgettes invited to collaborate: Beck, Jarvis Cocker, Air and Neil Hannon. Serge and Jane’s daughter did, however, cross the shadow line in 2013. The death of her sister Kate Barry undeniably influenced her music and four years later came Rest, an album of grief, which is on the same level as its counterparts by Nick Cave, Mount Eerie and Sufjan Stevens. If before Charlotte was already able to sublimate tragic beauty simply by pushing her fringe off her face with the back of her hand, the interpretation of this quasi R&B repertoire will certainly trigger the Stendhal syndrome in the audience.

Tot a punt per la primera jornada a tot gas de l’edició més ambiciosa del Primavera Sound al Fórum, que comença amb un cartell plagat de grans noms, on destaca el retorn (després de la seva breu separació, això si) de James Murphy i el seu projecte de més èxit, LCD Soundsystem, que ha promès nou disc per aquest any; els australiansTame Impala, màxims representants de la nova psicodèlia, que van facturar un dels millors àlbums de 2015, ‘Currents’; , duo francès format per Nicolas Godin i Jean-Benoît Dunckel, que tornen com a grans ambaixadors de l’elegància pop, el french touch més inquiet i l’electrònica subtil; els texans Explosions In The Sky, grans valedors del rock instrumental contemporani; el californià Vince Staples, que amb només 22 anys es presenta com un dels noms destacats del hip hop actual; John Carpenter, mestre de terror cinematogràfic que pujarà l’escenari amb la seva faceta musical per interpretar les inquietants bandes sonores dels seus films i temes del seu fosc ‘Lost themes’ (2015); repetiran els britànics Suede; el jazz còsmic del saxofonista Kamasi Washington; el texà Alan Palomo, un dels talents més inquiets de l’electrònica actual al capdevant del seu projecte Neon Indian; el trio londinenc Daughter i el seu pop somiador; els novaiorquesos Battles i la seva al·lucinada experimentació; l’imprescindible Destroyer, projecte de Dan Bejar, que presentarà ‘Poison season’ (2015), treball en el qual ha reinterpretat a la seva manera el romanticisme de clàssics dels setanta; la incendiària barreja del trio Algiers o el country-folk gran reserva i les delícies psicodèliques de Cass McCombs.
En aquesta primera jornada, de casa nostra destaquen la foscor dels asturians Fasenuova, la llum psicodèlica de Alberto Montero o els sintètics Holögrama.
The Holydrug Couple, duo xilè format per Ives (veu i guitarra, baix i teclats) i Manu (bateria) passen per Barcelona per presentar ‘Moonlust’ (2015), un disc que s’allunya bastant dels límits del llenguatge neo-psicodèlic tan de moda avui en dia. Hi incorporen influències francòfones com l’electro d’Air, balades soul d’Aretha Franklin o grups de synthpop Llatinoamericans dels 80 com Los Encargados, Virus i Los Prisioneros. Comparteixen cartell amb l’evocador quintet de Barcelona Celestial Bums. Avui al Freedonia del Raval.
