El britànic Jake Bugg, ha construït una sòlida carrera que va començar als 12 anys quan va aprendre a tocar la guitarra. Inspirat per artistes com Don McLean, Johnny Cash o The Beatles, va començar un parell d’anys després a compondre els seus propis temes. Ara, amb només 23 anys i després d’estar nominat al Mercury Music Prize i als Brits, defensa el seu quart disc, ‘Hearts that strain’ (2017), una nova mostra del seu pop rock de guitarres.
Maresme is Pedro Magina and Cristian Subirà, a Barcelona duo that leans towards the most experimental and atmospheric side of electronic music. With synthesisers that seem to come out of a David Lynch nightmare and a repertoire full of oneiric atmospheres and drowsy melodies, the Barcelona duo positions itself somewhere between ambient and new age. The Barcelona band will debut in 2017 on the Catalan label Foehn. This sunday at Primavera Sound.
They are living rock history and one of the indispensable pillars of modern music. Furthermore, they are also a Scottish indie referents and, undoubtedly, one of the bands with one of the best live shows in the world today. Equally eclectic and virtuous who have been able to evolve Madchester sound of “Screamadelica” to the rave horizon of “XTRMNTR”.
By the way, there is everything: shoegaze, noise, C86 sound and even Rock’n’Roll (Do you remember the garage hype that was Country Girl, Riot City Blues?). Although her first two EPs showed great promise, nobody expected Britain’s FKA Twigs’s first album (simply entitled “LP1”) to reach the level of excellence it achieved, appearing in 9 out of 10 ‘best of 2014’ lists (in many of which she was number one). Her breakthrough is great news for the pop world, too often devoid of figures with her personality, versatility and talent and she will come to Sónar having transformed into a global star.
FKA Twigs -whose real name is Tahliah Barnett- is a complete artist. The daughter of a Jamaican jazz dancer, she dedicated herself to professional dancing as soon as she hit her teens, appearing in videos for Kylie Minogue and touring with Jessie J. She started to produce her own material at just 16 years old. Originally known as Twigs, FKA was added (short for “formerly known as”), as another singer already existed with the same name. She began to compose, create beats and sing, and her first release “EP1” was an exciting combination of dark electronica, pop and future r&b. It was released in December 2012, along with her first videos (one of which was directed by Jesse Kanda), helping to share her powerful image on the world stage. Her second EP was produced in tandem with Arca, arguably one of today’s most interesting young producers. It soon became abundantly clear that this was no ordinary artist with her unique ability as a singer, producer, instrumentalist, arranger and video producer (for herself and other artists). “LP1” counted on input from Sampha, Blood Orange, Paul Epworth, Clams Casino and Arca, but her powerful personality and voice prevails, and is the dominant force of her sound. L’icònic grup britànic Duran Duran, habitual a les llistes d’èxits de tot el món (més de 100 milions de discos venuts), actuarà per primera vegada a Sónar, presentant el seu nou i espectacular directe, que inclou material de tota la seva llarga i fructífera trajectòria. Actualment es troben a l’estudi treballant en un nou àlbum (el catorzè de la seva carrera) amb els productors Mark Ronson, Nile Rodgers (Chic) i Mr. Hudson. Al disc, que té prevista la sortida oficial pel mes de setembre, hi participen també col·laboradors de la talla de John Frusciante, guitarrista de Red Hot Chili Peppers, o l’ex Sex Pistols Steve Jones, entre d’altres. El seu concert a Sónar serà una de les poques aparicions del grup abans de que el nou àlbum vegi la llum, fet que el fa encara més especial.
Duran Duran es van formar a principis dels anys vuitanta a Birmingham amb John Taylor i Nick Rhodes com a membres fundadors, als que s’afegirien, l’any 81, el cantant Simon LeBon, el guitarrista Andy Taylor i el bateria Roger Taylor. Els cinc van gravar el seu àlbum de debut aquell mateix any. Inspirats pel glam, l’art-rock de la Velvet Underground, el pop calidoscòpic de David Bowie, el punk i la dance music, el seu èxit va ser immediat, gràcies a una potent imatge que barrejava moda, tecnologia i visuals. En dos anys es va convertir en un dels grups més famosos del món i trenta anys després continuen tocant pels seus fans als cinc continents. Sempre actius, han guanyat multitud de premis importants i han treballat amb artistes de primer ordre, com Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Brandon Flowers, Billy Corgan, Kelis o David Lynch, que recentment va dirigir un dels seus concerts al film “Duran Duran: Unstaged”, presentat a Cannes l’any 2013. William Phillips is the man behind Tourist, one of the most talked about projects on the British scene, especially since his recent signing to Disclosure’s Method label. The pivotal moment in his career came about with the release of EP “Patterns”, a contemporary slice of electronica containing subsonic sounds characteristic of bass music, r&b and UK garage elements, inspired melodic hooks and vocal contributions from the likes of Lianne La Havas and Will Heard. Philips is a classically trained pianist and renowned composer and remixer. In partnership with Jimmy Napes he has worked on tracks for Sam Smith and Disclosure, and his remix discography includes Chvrches, Haim and Sharon Van Etten, among others. When Tourist plays live his emotive sound is enhanced even further. Using the piano as a central component he maintains his extreme attention to detail and track musicality. To quote him, the end result is something like “dance music for people who do not like to dance.”
Per si no havia quedat ja suficientment clar que Jamie Smith és un dels productors més inspirats sorgits aquesta dècada al Regne Unit, “Sleep Sound” i “All Under One Roof Raving” han acabat de convèncer als més escèptics. Dos temes, publicats a Young Turks, que són pur Jamie xx, captivadors, moderns i clàssics al mateix temps: el link que uneix l’electrònica britànica pretèrita (amb referències a l’època rave) i les noves formes de línies pop que cada vegada guanyen més terreny als mitjans i les llistes d’èxits. Una nova demostració de classe i talent d’un home (un xaval, en realitat: 24 anys) en permanent estat de gràcia. Els seus últims moviments apunten en noves direccions: ha posat música al treball de la vídeo-artista Sofia Mattioli (al costat de Koreless i John Talabot) i s’ha encarregat de la partitura per a una peça de ballet que s’estrenarà properament al Manchester International Festival.
Jamie xx és un dels tres vèrtexs de The xx, banda que ha revolucionat el pop actual amb un so altament suggestiu, en gran part responsabilitat del propi Jamie. Després de l’enlluernador debut del grup, el londinenc de seguida va començar a crear els seus propis tracks i a remesclar els d’altres artistes amb excel·lents resultats. La seva revisió de “Rolling In The Deep” d’Adele va marcar un punt d’inflexió a la seva trajectòria, i amb l’àlbum de remescles dels últims temes que va gravar en vida Gil Scott-Heron (“We’re New Here”) es convertiria en el que és avui: un dels djs i productors més admirats del món.
