Festival Cruïlla 2019

The favourite summer festival of Barcelona locals, Cruïlla, proudly waves the flag of eclecticism, and this year puts on its tenth edition from July 3 to 6 at the Parc del Fòrum with a line-up filled with performances of all types of trends and musical styles.

The festival added an extra day this year to kick things off with a star act. Back in Barcelona a decade after their last performances, it’s the Black Eyed Peas. Fergie’s not with the band, but you won’t want to miss the founding MCs, Will.i.am, Apl.de.ap and producer Taboo, authors of hits like ‘I Gotta Feeling’ and ‘Pump It’, as they present their first album in eight years. Opening for them is young Norwegian artist Aurora, making her debut in Spain with her mix of folk and electronica.

This year Cruce perform on Thursday the 4th in a day dedicated to urban sounds and young audiences. Also confirmed for Thursday are rappers Natos and Waor, Ayax and Prok from Granada, and Lildami, who is popular on the Catalan trap scene.

Rock is the star of the day on Friday the 5th, with bands like the UK’s Bastille, presenting their expert live show; and you can also catch the return of Scottish outfit Garbage, 13 years after their last visit to Barcelona. Shirley Manson and company are back with a show full of nostalgia, where their best-known album – ‘Version 2.0’ – will shine two decades after its initial release, and you’ll also get to know some new tracks off their upcoming 2019 release. Keep an eye out for the first concert in Barcelona in more than three years by Oxford-based five-piece band Foals, where you can discover new songs from their forthcoming fifth album; Vetusta Morla, one of Spanish rock’s top bands in recent years, also celebrating their tenth birthday; and the mix of alternative pop with classic folk from Xoel López. Other confirmed names include Gang of Youths from Australia, who’ve become better known after having gone on tour with Foo Fighters; France’s Zaz, presenting ‘Effet miroir’ (2018); Catalan classics Els Pets; Dublin singer Dermot Kennedy; Iseo & DodosSound, who are embassadors of reggae in Spain; and DJ Amable.

A more eclectic line-up features on the final day, Australian pop diva Kylie Minogue, who’s one of the headliners on Saturday. This is also Kylie’s first and only big concert in Spain she’ll give to present her latest album, ‘Golden’ (2018). Also taking the stage are British band Years & Years; soul artist Michael Kiwanuka; the Brazilian festival that is Seu Jorge, who’s coming along with his band to show off the power of samba; Jorge Drexler, who recently won two Latin Grammys for ‘Salvavidas de Hielo’ (2017); Parov Stelar, the creator of electro swing; Marcelo D2, a legendary figure in Brazilian music and activism; Malian singer Oumou Sangare; duo Elyella; epic riffs from Cala Vento; metaphysical pop from El Petit de Cal Eril; and two big local bands: Love of Lesbian celebrate Cruïlla’s tenth anniversary by growing their live act to include a trio of horns (sax, trumpet, trombone), percussion, vibraphone and steel guitar; and Dorian, who filled Razzmatazz to the limit to present their album ‘Justicia universal’ (2018) in their home town.

Vida Festival 2018

The Vida festival has become one of the musts on the Catalan summer music festival calendar in record time, and it celebrates its fifth anniversary this year with a line-up that’s got us all ready to get to the Masia d’en Cabanyes just down the coast in Vilanova i la Geltrú from June 28 to July 1.

St. Vincent is one of the headliners this year, as she presents ‘Masseduction’ (2017), the latest album from the American singer-songwriter and guitarist also known as Annie Clark; Scottish band Franz Ferdinand also present their new effort, ‘Always Ascending’ (2018); and Of Montreal, American indie artist Kevin Barnes’s project, also debut tracks from their album ‘White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood’ (2018); English singer-songwriter Nick Mulvey presents his second solo work, ‘Wake Up Now’ (2017); and the legendary band out of Arizona Calexico, led by Joey Burns and John Convertino, take to the stages once again with their ninth album, ‘The Thread That Keeps Us’ (2018). Other international acts to check out include singer-songwriters Elvis Perkins, Bart Davenportand Josh Rouse; noise from Hookworms; krautdisco from DBFC; and guitar pop from newcomers out of Norway, Great News.

More local acts include Los Planetas, one of the biggest bands on the Spanish music scene, who come along with their ninth album, ‘Zona temporalmente autónoma’ (2017), under their arm as well; El Petit de Cal Eril, the band led by Joan Pons, bring their metaphysical pop and the psychedelia of their live shows to the festival with their own ninth album, dubbed ‘Δ’ (2018); the six-piece Oso Leone from Mallorca also present a new, and much-anticipated, album, which is released this year and shows off their more electronic and R&B sides; and the mathrock duo ZA! also have new music to show off.

You can also check out fast and powerful pop from young Valencian band La Plata; the mix of krautrock, metal and pscyhedelia that Medalla have for you; punk from Galician outfit Novedades Carminha; and from Murcia it’s Perro, among others.

Favourite Gig: El Petit de Cal Eril

Una gran dosis de pop metafísic serà el que ens trobarem en aquesta gran trobada a l’Apolo amb dos dels millors discos en el que portem de 2018. D’una banda el ‘Blanc’ (2018) de Ferran Palau, tercer disc de la brillant carrera en solitari del component d’Anímic, que presentarà en directe amb Joan Pons (El Petit de Cal Eril), Dani Comas i Jordi Matas. De l’altra El Petit de Cal Eril, projecte liderat per Pons, que presenten en directe i compartint banda amb Palau també nou disc, el triangular ‘△’, produït, gravat i plantejat com una trilogia d’EPs, cadascun amb tres cançons inèdites i gravats en tres contextos molt diferents. Des d’una casa de palla a la Garrotxa fins a l’estudi Figure 8 de Nova York.

Ville à Dômat #212: ‘La Belle Musique’

El programa més hedonista del moment torna avui amb una sessió de “belle musique”. Divus Julius Bonasera estrena el més nou de Yo La Tengo, A Place To Bury Strangers, Courtney Barnett, Leon Bridges, The Vaccines, Young Fathers o Embrace. Ens farem ressò dels dos concerts de la setmana: El Petit de Cal Eril i Benjamin Clementine. A més, com ja és habitual, descobrirem a nous artistes com: Yuno, Pizzagir,l Kero Kero Bonito, Cut Worms o The Magic Gang.

A més presentem una de les millors sèries del 2017: The Deuce.

Cruïlla 2017

El festival Cruïlla, un dels festivals de referència de l’estiu a la ciutat, celebrarà la seva vuitena edició els dies 7 i 8 de Juliol al Parc del Fòrum apostant com sempre per un cartell eclèctic al marge de barreres estilístiques.

Després d’una primera tongada d’artistes anunciats, el Cruïlla ha confirmat les actuacions de Jamiroquai, que presentarà el seu nou disc en el que serà l’únic concert a Espanya de Jay Kay; Pet Shop Boys, que presentaran en directe ‘Super’ (2016); a més dels directes de The Prodigy, Two Door Cinema Club, Die Antwoord, Ryan Adams, Little Steven & The Disciples of Soul (projecte de Steven Van Zandt), Ani Difranco, Residente (meitat de Calle 13), el pioner de l’electro-swing Parov Stelar (si el seu nom no us sona els seus ‘hits’ segur que sí), la francesa Jain (autora de l’èxit televisiu ‘Come’), i AronChupa (factòtum d”I’m an Albatraoz’).

Pel que fa als artistes estatals, destaquen Txarango, Exquirla (el nou projecte que uneix el ‘cantaor’ Niño de Elche i el grup de rock instrumental Toundra), Enric Montefusco, La Raíz, Dorian, Nicola Cruz, El Petit de Cal Eril, Pau Vallvé, Carlos Sadness, Neuman i Oques Grasses, entre d’altres.

S’afegeixen als ja confirmats The Lumineers, banda de Denver convertida en una de les referències de la nova Americana i que presentarà el seu segon disc, ‘Cleopatra’ (2016); Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, que porten 25 anys com una de les bandes més importants del rock en espanyol; Youssou N’Dour, figura clau de la música africana, l’alemany Patrice, creador del Sweggae, presentant el seu nou disc, ‘Life’s blood’ (2016) o l’MC Kase.O, que torna al Cruïlla per presentar nou disc, ‘El Círculo’.

El Cruïlla manté també la seva oferta de concerts més llargs que l’estàndard dels festivals, 90 minuts per als caps de cartell i 60 minuts per a la resta d’artistes i grups.

Primavera Sound 2017: Dissabte 3

L’últim dia de Primavera Sound 2017 al Fòrum arriba carregat de concerts imprescindibles en una jornada protagonitzada per vells coneguts del festival com els canadencs Arcade Fire, que sempre que visiten la ciutat ens fan entrar en una espècie de catarsi col·lectiva amb el seu pop poderós liderat per Win Butler i Régine Chassagne; l’influent músic nord-irlandès Van Morrison, un dels noms més influents de la seva generació debuta al festival com també ho fa la hiptnotitzant diva jamaicana Grace Jones. La resta de la jornada se la reparteixen, entre d’altres, els reis del pop escocès Teenage Fanclub, que presentaran el seu desè disc d’estudi, ‘Here’ (2016); la cada cop més cotitzada cantat i compositora de Missouri Angel Olsen, que defensarà ‘My woman’ (2016), el seu tercer i millor disc; el sempre efectiu pop electrònic dels britànics Metronomy; el brasiler Seu Jorge interpretant les cançons de David Bowie que va versionar per a la banda sonora del film de Wes Anderson ‘The life aquatic’; Junun, projecte de Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead) amb Shye Ben Tzur que es mou entre les músiques tradicionals del nord de l’Índia, acompanyats per la Rajasthan Express; la bogeria dance-punk dels novaiorquesos !!! (Chk Chk Chk); l’enèrgic xou de l’MC Skepta, estrella del grime londinenc o el retorn de les poderoses guitarres dels nord-americans Royal Trux. De més a prop ens visitaran Joan Pons liderant El Petit De Cal Eril, que presentaran ‘La força’ (2016) o la nova jove promesa del flamenc Rosalía, que presentarà el disc ‘Los Ángeles’ (2017) al costat de Refree.
