Hit of the week: Future Islands ‘For Sure’
Synthpop heroes Future Islands are back with their first new song in three years. The track is called “For Sure” and it sees the Baltimore band teaming up with Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak, a pairing that sounds seamless in practice.
“For Sure” is a soaring number that feels like you’re being filled with hope — something we could certainly use a little more of this year. Armed with their usual blend of synthpop, nonstop drums, and big choral hooks, Future Islands push their moody music to new heights here thanks to Wasner’s soft harmonies.
Favourite Gig: Future Islands
This Baltimore trio is made up of the deep-voiced Samuel T. Herring, bassist William Cashion and keyboardist and programmer Gerrit Whelmers. Future Islands got their start more than a decade ago, and made it big with their fourth album, ‘Singles’ (2014), which included their international hit ‘Seasons (Waiting on You)’. They’re back with a new effort, ‘The Far Field’ (2017), and more of their electro-pop full of romanticism that combines moments of light with moments of darkness and epic sounds. Tonight at Poble Espanyol.
