Best Covers: Soft Cell “Tainted Love”

. American singer Gloria Jones was the first one to record “Tainted Love,” which was written and produced by Ed Cobb. It was released as the B-side to “My Bad Boy’s Comin’ Home” in 1965, but it wasn’t until the early seventies that the song caught on when a U.K. DJ gave it some love because it fit with the Northern Soul thing happening there. Jones rerecorded “Tainted Love” in 1976 with her boyfriend, Marc Bolan (of T. Rex), producing.  She was also driving the car in the accident that killed Bolan on September 16, 1977. . English duo Soft Cell‘s 1981 synthpop version is the one that made this tune famous. It charted numerous times in the early 80s.

Les versions d’il Dottore: Imelda May: “Tainted Love”

Imelda May, la cantant que va tornar a posar el rockabilly de moda torna a Barcelona per defensar el seu últim i tercer disc ‘Tribal’ (2014). Es tracta d’un àlbum de rock and roll barrejat amb l’esperit de Sun Studios, on el so va néixer a Memphis, Tennesse, però amb un toc del segle XXI d’una noia criada als carrers de Dublín. A aquest toc rockabilly cal sumar-li un esperit rebel de les bandes de punk que Imelda admirava des de jove com The Clash, Undertones, The Buzzcocks i The Cramps. Il Dottore ens presenta avui la versió que Imelda fa de la cançó “Tainted Love”. Aquest tema originalment escrit l’any 1964 per Ted Cobb i interpretat per Gloria Jones fou també versionat els 80 per Soft Cell.  Imelda May tocarà avui a la Sala Apolo.
