Chic was a group led by bass player Bernard Edwards and guitarist Nile Rodgers. Both were very successful writers and producers, combining to work on hits for Sister Sledge and Diana Ross.
It was New Year’s Eve, 1977, and they were invited to Studio 54, a very popular club in New York Cit. A singer named Grace Jones wanted Rodgers and Edwards to do some production work for her, and asked them to come down to the club as her guest. When they got there, they were not on the list, and couldn’t convince the doorman that they were the group Chic. All dressed up and nowhere to go on New Year’s Eve, they left and started writing this song as a reply to the doorman. They called it “F–k Off,” but when they decided to record it, Edwards wasn’t comfortable with the cursing, so they tried it as “Freak Off.” That title sounded lame, but when they made the opening lines “aaaahh Freak Out!” instead of “aaaahh F–k Off!”, they came up with a better title: “La Freak.”
Certain music is synonymous with France, from classic chanson to rebellious 60’s yé-yé, from “French Touch” electronic music, to the widescreen musical genius of Serge Gainsbourg. But it is the beautifully debauched world of 1970s French Boogie which Corine is resurrecting with her own brand of “erotic disco”. She looks every inch the authentic 70s diva with her distinctive shock of peroxide blonde hair, judicious use of eye shadow, and an extensive collection of jumpsuits. The name Corine is French prostitute slang for cocaine, and she dedicates her music to “the excess of the disco years, Le Palace, and its dancers who never grow tired”. Le Palace was a legendary Parisian nightclub on whose opening night in 1978 Grace Jones sang ‘La Vie en Rose’ from on top of a pink Harley Davidson, surrounded by shining roses and mountains of dry ice. L’últim dia de Primavera Sound 2017 al Fòrum arriba carregat de concerts imprescindibles en una jornada protagonitzada per vells coneguts del festival com els canadencs Arcade Fire, que sempre que visiten la ciutat ens fan entrar en una espècie de catarsi col·lectiva amb el seu pop poderós liderat per Win Butler i Régine Chassagne; l’influent músic nord-irlandès Van Morrison, un dels noms més influents de la seva generació debuta al festival com també ho fa la hiptnotitzant diva jamaicana Grace Jones. La resta de la jornada se la reparteixen, entre d’altres, els reis del pop escocès Teenage Fanclub, que presentaran el seu desè disc d’estudi, ‘Here’ (2016); la cada cop més cotitzada cantat i compositora de Missouri Angel Olsen, que defensarà ‘My woman’ (2016), el seu tercer i millor disc; el sempre efectiu pop electrònic dels britànics Metronomy; el brasiler Seu Jorge interpretant les cançons de David Bowie que va versionar per a la banda sonora del film de Wes Anderson ‘The life aquatic’; Junun, projecte de Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead) amb Shye Ben Tzur que es mou entre les músiques tradicionals del nord de l’Índia, acompanyats per la Rajasthan Express; la bogeria dance-punk dels novaiorquesos !!! (Chk Chk Chk); l’enèrgic xou de l’MC Skepta, estrella del grime londinenc o el retorn de les poderoses guitarres dels nord-americans Royal Trux. De més a prop ens visitaran Joan Pons liderant El Petit De Cal Eril, que presentaran ‘La força’ (2016) o la nova jove promesa del flamenc Rosalía, que presentarà el disc ‘Los Ángeles’ (2017) al costat de Refree.
Where other artists tease with glimpses of their forthcoming albums, Gorillaz, the ever-shifting musical entity headed up by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, is flooding the zone, releasing four new songs from their forthcoming album, Humanz, which is due out April 28.
The complete album will consist of 14 tracks, 19 on the deluxe version, and will also be available as a “super deluxe vinyl box set” with each of the 14 tracks on a separate 12” slab, backed by an alternate version. A list of the album’s featured artists includes Vince Staples, Peven Everett, Popcaan, De La Soul, Danny Brown, Grace Jones, Mavis Staples, Pusha T, and Carly Simon, with actor Ben Mendelsohn narrating the album interludes.
Here’s the music, and note that the Hewlett-directed six-minute video “Saturnz Barz (Spirit House),” which contains clips from all four songs, is available in both regular and, via supported web browsers, 360-degree versions.
Abans d’hora, quan ningú s’ho esparava; tot i que fa uns dies el festival ens va sorprendre amb un compte enrere, el Primavera Sound ha desvetllat el cartell complert. Al capdavant d’aquest gruixut cartell hi trobem The XX. Els anglesos publicaran el proper mes de gener el seu esperadíssim tercer disc i tot feia suposar que serian en el festival primaverenc i així ha estat. Entre els altres caps de cartell hi trobem Arcade Fire que repeteixen dos anys després i que de moment no semblen massa posats a publicar nou disc. Els altres dos grans noms del festival seran Bon Iver i Frank Ocean que han publicat recentment els seus nous discs. Un dels grans i veterans icones de l’electrònica, Aphex Twin també formarà part d’aquesta capçalera conjuntament amb veterans con Van Morrison i Grace Jones. A més, un gran elenc de bandes i artistes de les quals destaquem Glass Animals, Metronomy, The Growlers, Whitney, Preoccupations, Saint Etienne, Local Natives, !!!, Wild Beasts, Alexandara Savior, Formation, Operator o els King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard entre d’altres.
