Hit of the week: HMLTD ‘The West Is Dead’

HMLTD have shared a politically charged new single right this moment, ‘The West Is Dead’.  The London five-piece will launch their debut album, ‘West of Eden’ on February 7 by way of impartial label Fortunate Quantity.

The expansive, labyrinthine debut has been several years in the making; a daring collection of songs created to incite conversation about proposed new visions of masculinity, the decadence of western capitalism and the violence of insecurity and repression. Across its 15 tracks, the band’s artistic vision is realised in full technicolour, with all shades of their sonic palette used to create an album that is equal parts lush and abrasive.

HMLTD són una banda de grans ambicions. Fins a la data, han causat enrenou tant a la seva ciutat natal de Londres com a ciutats de tot el Regne Unit i més enllà, atraient a un públic tan nou com fanàtic, seduïts pels seus pocs singles i els seus vídeos, poderosament cridaners. Han omplert l‘Scala, l’Electric Ballroom i altres sales similars, i són, en l’actualitat, el que es podria descriure com una banda de culte amb éxit. Quan van rebre una proposta del productor de Los Angeles Justin Tranter (Selena Gomez, Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears, … Justin Bieber) per produir la seva música, no s’ho van pensar. Moltes bandes independents s’haurien negat a la idea de treballar amb un productor així, però per HMLTD tenia sentit. Ja a L.A, la combinació entre HMLTD i Tranter va funcionar ràpidament. Els seus primers quatre dies, van tenir quatre cançons. Els primers fruits del treball d’estudi seria Pictures Of You, una cançó pop gegant i titànica amb ganxos innegables i addictius que, en lloc de sonar com el treball de Justin Tranter, encara té totes les característiques d’una creació HMLTD. Així com el seu següent single, Proxy Love, amb un cor pop perfecte. Aquesta nit a la sala Razzmatazz.

There’s a kind of Ziggy Stardust elegance that also borrows from the sartorial height of punk. Then there’s the sounds, which take the whole boundaryless idea of musical consumption that everyone can thank the internet for and pushes it to extremes.

The shouty south Londoners write songs about politics, perverts, and their insecurities, and reject the laddism of the indie scene.  Shame formed when the five members were in their mid-teens and bumped along anonymously for a while, part of a nascent south London scene of bands drawn together through mutual friends that also included HMLTD, Goat Girl and Dead Pretties. Tonight they will present their debut album at Sidecar.
