Sónar 2018 #Thursday

At long last Sónar is back, this time celebrating its 25th year, with more than 140 performances scheduled. And as has become tradition, it kicks off the first day with Sónar by Day at the Fira de Montjuïc with a line-up that includes the return of one of the most-anticipated acts in the history of the festival, which has left audiences wanting more every year since it started up in 2014. It’s DESPACIO, the club experience from James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) and brothers David and Stephen Dewaele (2manydjs) at the decks. Along with a spectacular sound system, they’ll play only vinyls in three six-hour DJ sets, one on each day of Sónar by Day. The first day of the festival, highlights also include the session ‘Laurent plays Garnier’, where renowned French DJ Laurent Garnier closes out the day with a session that sees him reviewing his whole career behind the turntables; Francisco Contreras (Niño de Elche) and flamenco dancer Israel Galván, with a show they’ve created for the first time together and which makes its debut at Sónar; Norwegian artist Jenny Hval and her extravagant, provocative and avant-garde spirit; the precise melodies of British artist George FitzGerald, who presents his second album, ‘All That Must Be’ (2018); Little Simz, a project from young vocalist, actress and rapper Simbiatu Ajikawo from London by way of Nigerian parents; emerging Korean DJ, singer and producer Yaeji; Kode9 presents a show inspired by video games, with visuals by legendary anime artist Koji Morimoto; composers Yuzo Koshiro & Motohiro Kawashima put on a show inspired by classic games such as Streets of Rage; iconic DJ and leader of the New Jersey garage sound Tony Humphrieshas a set house lined up that’s inspired by the golden age of radio in New York; urban beats from Valencia’s Mueveloreina; and Putochinomaricón, an electro pop project from Chenta Tsai, who’s from Madrid with Chinese roots.

Hit of the week: LCD Soundsystem “Tonite”

With less than a month to go before the release of LCD Soundsystem’s comeback album, American Dream, the group has shared a new song. It’s titled “tonite” and was previously debuted live during LCD’s five-night stand at Brooklyn Steel back in April.  American Dream officially lands in stores September 1st. “tonite” follows the tracks “call the police” and “american dream”. The reunited outfit (thanks, David Bowie!) recently expanded its US tour behind the LP.

Music by Bergman: Sinkane

British artist Ahmed Gallab of Sudanese origins knows very well that in the beginning there was rhythm, something to which he applies with great dedication in his double life as Sinkane, a vibrant project of electronic music mixed with delectable funk, jazz, krautrock and Sudanese pop that caught the attention of DFA, the influential New York label captained by James Murphy that released his latest two records. Conceived as a true dialogue between cultures and traditions and with a sound that is furiously contemporary,  “Life & Livin’ It”, is their new album.

Hit of the week: Arcade Fire ‘Everything Now’

Arcade Fire have announced their fifth album Everything Now will be released next month on Columbia. You can now hear the official stream of the title track after the band’s surprise released it on 12″ at Primavera Festival this week.

The disco-inflected track is produced by the band along with Pulp’s Steve Mackey and Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter, though no details have surfaced about the full tracklist or production credits. Arcade Fire’s last album, 2014’s Reflektor was produced by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, although he might be a little busy with bringing his own band back to help out this time. Everything Now is out July 28.

Primavera Sound 2016 #Thursday

Tot a punt per la primera jornada a tot gas de l’edició més ambiciosa del Primavera Sound al Fórum, que comença amb un cartell plagat de grans noms, on destaca el retorn (després de la seva breu separació, això si) de James Murphy i el seu projecte de més èxit, LCD Soundsystem, que ha promès nou disc per aquest any; els australiansTame Impala, màxims representants de la nova psicodèlia, que van facturar un dels millors àlbums de 2015, ‘Currents’; , duo francès format per Nicolas Godin i Jean-Benoît Dunckel, que tornen com a grans ambaixadors de l’elegància pop, el french touch més inquiet i l’electrònica subtil; els texans Explosions In The Sky, grans valedors del rock instrumental contemporani; el californià Vince Staples, que amb només 22 anys es presenta com un dels noms destacats del hip hop actual; John Carpenter, mestre de terror cinematogràfic que pujarà l’escenari amb la seva faceta musical per interpretar les inquietants bandes sonores dels seus films i temes del seu fosc ‘Lost themes’ (2015); repetiran els britànics Suede; el jazz còsmic del saxofonista Kamasi Washington; el texà Alan Palomo, un dels talents més inquiets de l’electrònica actual al capdevant del seu projecte Neon Indian; el trio londinenc Daughter i el seu pop somiador; els novaiorquesos Battles i la seva al·lucinada experimentació; l’imprescindible Destroyer, projecte de Dan Bejar, que presentarà ‘Poison season’ (2015), treball en el qual ha reinterpretat a la seva manera el romanticisme de clàssics dels setanta; la incendiària barreja del trio Algiers o el country-folk gran reserva i les delícies psicodèliques de Cass McCombs.

En aquesta primera jornada, de casa nostra destaquen la foscor dels asturians Fasenuova, la llum psicodèlica de Alberto Montero o els sintètics Holögrama.

LCD Soundsystem, l’aperitiu del Primavera

El grup novaiorquès liderat per James Murphy oferirà, com a prèvia a la seva actuació dins del Fòrum el dijous 2 de juny a la primera jornada del Primavera Sound, un concert extra avui a la sala Barts.

Cinc anys després de l’aturada indefinida de la banda, LCD Soundsystem tornen amb la mateixa força que els va convertir en la definició de la música alternativa d’una dècada i en una experiència imperdible en directe, que es podrà gaudir per partida doble en el marc del festival. Condensant 40 anys de rock i ball en els seus discos, el grup ha sabut unir en la seva discografia el post punk, la música de ball, el pop i l’electrònica i fondre-ho en hits instantanis com ‘Losing my edge’, ‘All my friends’ o ‘Daft Punk is playing at my house’. Tres àlbums d’estudi i un en directe conformen el seu llegat fins al moment, a l’espera del seu imminent nou disc.
