Having collaborated with the likes of SBTRKT and Kwes, toured with Kindness, as well as running her own vegan Jamaican supper club ‘Dee’s Table’, and crafting sublimely intricate, cascading electronica Denai Moore is a truly multi-talented and singular creative force.

Identity and otherness, two ideas that have dominated political and cultural discourse in 2017, hold a special sort of fascination for British alt-pop producer Adam Bainbridge. Growing up as a mixed race kid — his father is English, his mother an Indian exile from South Africa, the daughter of political prisoner Amina Desai — in the predominantly white town of Peterborough probably has something to do with it. Then, in 2006, he gave up on a promising career as a grime producer after an early encounter with homophobia and transphobia at the hands of a celebrated blogger who goes by the name Donald Crunk.
By the time he returned to the industry in 2009 — this time as musical magpie/singer-producer Kindness — he had made peace with the idea of being an outsider. This reflects in his music, which sounds more than anything like a celebration of difference (he called his second album Otherness).
Kindness has announced details of their third album ‘Something Like A War’. Recorded in a series of locations across the world and produced entire by themselves, the follow-up to their 2014 album ‘Otherness’ is set for release on 6th September via Female Energy. Part of a new and very exciting breed of r&b singers (Abra, Alexandria, Dawn Richard, etc.) Kelela is noted for her versatility and ability to adapt to contemporary mainstream electronica. In 2013 her debut “Cut 4 Me” took the world by storm and was featured on numerous best of year lists. Her latest EP “Hallucinogen” (released on Warp) demonstrates her unique talent as an ever-evolving artist on the rise. Everything about her is special: her name (last name Mizanekristos) of Ethiopian origin; her stunning beauty; her incredibly versatile voice; her eye-catching videos and the unparalleled magnetism of her stage presence. Even more special are the six songs on “Hallucinogen”, lyrically stark and sincere with futuristic and captivating production techniques, featuring participation from Ark, Daniel Pineda, Kingdom and Nguzunguzu among others.
Kelela was born in Washington DC and began her musical career as part of the house duo Teengirl Fantasy. However her big break came thanks to the Fade To Mind family, sister label of the British Night Slugs imprint. A number of artists from the two highly regarded labels (Bok Bok, Nguzunguzu, Girl Unit, Kingdom and Jam City, among others) collaborated on her debut release, “Cut 4 Me”, providing killer beats and futuristic bass lines, perfect for showcasing her considerable vocal skills. The album received plaudits from none other than Björk, and also received rave reviews across America and Europe. Following the album came collaborations with Kindness, Obey City and Future Brown; her signing to Warp; and the release of the extraordinary “Hallucinogen”. Kelela moves with considerable ease between mutant soul, cutting edge beats and contemporary r&b, and has already established herself as one of the most important singers of her generation. Justifiably.
Els artistes confirmats de la 22a edició del Sónar, del 18 al 20 de juny, inclouen com sempre una barreja de clàssics, totalment consagrats, que són referents per a les noves generacions, i nous productors i bandes que perfilen els futurs camins de l’electrònica.
Entre els noms dels més de 150 que forman part del cartell del Sónar de Dia (Fira Montjuïc) i el Sónar de Nit (Fira Gran Via), destaca el nou xou de The Chemical Brothers, que seran els protagonistes del concert inaugural. Durant els últims 20 anys el duo de Manchester, que ha redefinit el concepte de la música electrònica en directe, col·laboren de nou amb el realitzador i artista visual Adam Smith. També destaca la presència Autechre, un dels duos més admirats i respectats de l’electrònica abstracta i experimental, els quals tornaran al Sónar gairebé dues dècades després del seu únic concert al festival el 1996.
A$AP Rocky, carismàtica estrella del hip-hop, arribarà a Sónar durant el procés de gestació del que serà el seu tercer àlbum, del que podria estrenar algunes cançons sobre l’escenari. L’MC de Harlem ha obtingut un enorme èxit de crítica i públic amb els seus dos primers discos, la mixtape ‘Live.Love.A$AP’ (2011) i l’LP ‘Long.Live.A$AP’ (2013), amb Skrillex, Drake i Kendrick Lamar entre d’altres col·laboradors. Rocky també ha participat en ‘tracks’ d’altres noms clau del ‘mainstream’ actual, com Rihanna, Justin Timberlake i Lana Del Rey.
Al cartell del Sónar 2015 sobresurten els noms de dues dones, FKA Twigs, una de les grans triomfadores del 2014 gràcies al seu debut, i l’ex-Moloko Róisín Murphy, així com els de dos ‘superstar DJ’, Skrillex i Jamie xx.
Entre els habituals del festival hi tornen Hot Chip, Die Antwoord i Flying Lotus, i la sorpresa en forma de clàssic de la història del pop electrònic la donen Duran Duran, que tenen previst publicar un nou àlbum al 2015.
Dos xous destaquen pel contingut audiovisual de primer nivell: l’aclaparador concert de Squarepusher (estrenant nou àlbum, ‘Damogen furies’) i Double Vision, espectacle que uneix els sons del productor alemany Atom™ amb les imatges i el disseny lumínic de l’artista australià Robin Fox.
Lee Gamble, respectat aventurer sònic, qui presentarà el seu nou concepte audiovisual en viu en col·laboració amb el dissenyador loninenc Gaskarth. L’electrònica exploratòria i el caire experimental del festival recau en noms de pes com Mika Vainio, Powell, The Bug, Randomer i el ‘showcase’ del 20 aniversari de segell Mego, que presenta Voices From the Lake, Russel Haswell, LCC, Klara Lewis i KTL. El nou trap i la bass music arribaran de la mà de Cashmere Cat, Redinho i Yung Lean & Sad Boys.
Atenció també amb joveníssims Vessel i Evian Christ, dos productors britànics amb un so propi i identificable que, partint del techno, exploren territoris sonors més complexos en xous de gran impacte sensorial. Destaquen també referents femenins com la compositora americana Holly Herndon i els seus mons sonors distòpics; la poetessa, performer i dramaturga britànica Kate Tempest, qui presentarà el seu primer disc; o la DJ alemanya de techno i electro Helena Hauff.
Entre els projectes de música de ball podrem gaudir del techno emotiu i ballable deKiasmos, produït per Ólafur Arnalds i Janus Rasmussen (Bloodgroup); del DJ Daniel Avery, nou mestre del tech-house britànic apadrinat per Erol Alkan; i de Sophie, que recentment ha col·laborat i conquistat a grans noms com Madonna, Diplo i Nicki Minaj amb el seu colorisme i els seus ritmes adscrits a la corrent de la PC Music. També es podrà ballar amb Laurent Garnier, Maya Jane Coles, Siriusmodeselktor, The 2 Bears,Roman Flügel, Ralph Lawson, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs i Henrik Schwarz.
En aquesta mateixa línia, també serà al Sónar 2015 –la majoria al Sónar de Nit– Seth Troxler, Tiga (en directe), Jamie Jones, Erol Alkan, Felix Dickinson, DJ Tennis, Kasper Bjørke i Adam Beyer, i joves representants de les noves corrents del grime, el trap o el jersei club, com Dj Sliink, Swindle, RL Grime i Gramatik.
El pop i els sons menys electrònics tenen un lloc destacat al festival amb noms com Fat Freddy’s Drop, neozelandesos que mesclen dub, reggae i soul amb tocs de house i techno, i els britànics Tourist i Kindness, dues peces clau del synth pop actual.
El festival acollirà les actuacions d’artistes de latituds llunyanes, com el sud-africà Black Coffee, els colombians Bomba Estereo o l’egípcia Bosaina.
L’escena de casa nostra tampoc hi faltarà, amb les explosives mescles de trap, hip-hop, R&B i reaggeton de PXXR GVNG, tot un fenomen social. També actuaran Jupiter Lion(cosmic kraut), Fernando Lagreca (chillwave) i CaboSanRoque (rock experimental maquinista).
