Listening to Matt Maltese‘s music is like looking through an eclectic wardrobe, where vintage accessories sit happily next to brand new pink suits. You can hear the Leonard Cohen running through it, but you can also hear the more contemporary influences of the current booming South London scene at play.
The strength in his latest track “Greatest Comedian” is the striking and exceptionally clever songwriting, where Maltese is both a storyteller, narrating from the sidelines with sardonic aptitude, but also something of a hopeless romantic that sits at the heart of it all.
Over the past year Londoner Matt Maltese has been crafting epic-sounding ballads inspired by his love of Leonard Cohen from his bedroom. Now, having signed a deal with Atlantic Records, the 20-year-old singer-songwriter has released his first single of 2017 : “As The World Caves In” taps into the sense of despair felt by many following the outcome of the U.S. election and Britain’s E.U. referendum in 2016 and adds a sense of melodrama and beauty.
