Birmingham-born artist Laura Mvula grew up loving Michael Jackson, Earth, Wind and Fire and singing in her auntie’s a cappella choir. Her thrilling and tender gospel pop has been nominated twice for the Mercury Prize, first for her debut album Sing Me To The Moon (2013) then for its follow up, The Dreaming Room (2016). A third, much anticipated album, Pink Noise, was released in July. Packed with 1980s-styled power pop bangers like Church Girl and Safe Passage, it features fierce synth lines and a touch of Grace Jones’s angular sensuality.
Hers has always been a strong, soulful voice and she has developed an increasingly confident and unique aesthetic throughout the years – both sonically and visually.
Michael Jackson’s Thriller remains the single most iconic era of pop music, and for good reason. It still stands as the best-selling album of all time with more than 33 million copies sold in the U.S., as certified by RIAA. As awe-inspiring as that number is, the music itself is as timeless now as it was then, from the spooky titular cut to a song like “Billie Jean” and its slinky, provocative bass line.
Regardless, “Billie Jean” is forever immortalized in the pantheons of pop music. The second single from Thriller, it reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won two Grammy Awards, Best R&B Song and Best R&B Male Vocal Performance.
