Chance the Rapper is one of the biggest names in hip-hop, but even more impressive than that is the fact that he’s managed to achieve all of his massive mainstream success on his own terms. While refusing to sign a record deal, the musician has instead self-released five mixtapes, which have all been made available for free. Chance has taken home three Grammy Awards, including best rap album for 2016’s Coloring Book, and dropped his first official studio album, The Big Day, in July 2019.
Excluding his offering for the Space Jam Soundtrack, it’s been just over a year since we heard new music from Chance The Rapper. The Chicago rapper returns with the release of a new single. This one is called ‘Child Of God’ and features Naïla Opiangah and Moses Sumney.
The combination of Amelia Meath’s vocals, with layers of homely melodies carrying vivid tales of real world people and emotions, and Nick Sanborn’s experimental mix of high-energy dance beats and lo-fi production mean Sylvan Esso create a familiar world unlike anything else.
There’s something in the way Sylvan Esso craft their music, weaving folksy melodies and acoustic instruments with synths and 808s, that feels like exactly what pop music should be: punchy and pure. With their new album ‘Free Love’ arriving on 25th September, Sylvan Esso are sharing new track ‘Frequency’, alongside a video directed and styled byMoses Sumney.
With a life spanning southern California and Ghana, it’s no wonder that Moses Sumney’s music amounts to a totally unclassifiable product while rising above as an act of resistance in itself. His unmistakable and singular falsetto, which he uses as another instrument in the mix, serves him to probe his orchestral and deeply experimental indie rock. This very 2020 he released Cut Me, an EP comprising 4 deeply intimate songs about how to avoid romantic love at all cost and that position him as a new ilk of avant-garde pop star. Some days ago he released his double album grae.
