The muses of La Musa: Lucy Dacus

March 2nd marks the release of Historian, the sophomore album from Virginia-bred indie singer-songwriter Lucy Dacus. Due out via new label home Matador Records, it’s been teased thus far with breakup track “Night Shift” and now a song called “Addictions”.

It’s easy to see why the 21-year-old’s star has risen so quickly. Her songs walk a line between grunge-indebted indie rock and alt-country, with the appealing warmth of Neko Case and, as many critics have noted, the self-deprecating wit of Courtney Barnett. More importantly, she has a voice we haven’t quite heard before and a unique talent for encapsulating the emotional truth of a moment in impressionistic lyrics that feel effortless.

Le Classique: Calexico “The ballad of Cable Hogue”

El Mariscal Mauro ha triat la cançó de Calexico “The ballad of Cable Hogue” com “le classique” d’aquesta setmana. El rock fronterer dels de Tucson brillarà a la vora del mar, en la presentació a Barcelona del seu darrer treball. Joey Burns i John Convertino porten gairebé tres dècades fent de la frontera la seva llar. Primer com a aliats de Howe Gelb, un altre explorador del desert, a Giant Sand, i des de mitjans dels anys noranta al capdavant de Calexico. Ningú com ells ha sabut acostar el so del folklore tex-mex a la radiant calidesa del pop, fent diana amb la cúmbia i també amb valsos en miniatura. Una riquesa de registres que els ha convertit en tot un referent de l’americana i del country alternatiu.

 

El 2015, Calexico van publicar Edge of the Sun, un disc ple de flamants cançons noves i que, alhora, funciona com una mena de panoràmica de la seva trajectòria, plena de rostres familiars d’amics i col·laboradors: Sam Beam (Iron & Wine), Ben Bridwell (Band of Horses), Amparo Sánchez (Amparanoia), Neko Case… Un elenc de luxe, eclèctic i internacional, per a celebrar unes sonoritats globals que els de Tucson han convertit en gloriós segell d’identitat. Music by Bergman: Andy Shauf

Mestre Bergman introduces us to this striking arist. The background: Shauf belongs to that category of gentle, breathy-voiced cult singer-songwriters, mainly American, who specialise in wan, waspish tales of marginalised characters and their bittersweet love lives. So if you like Elliott Smith, Joe Pernice, Andrew Morgan, Kevin Tihista or the Aluminium Group, then you’ll love this Canadian purveyor of melodic chamber-pop. His music is richly textured but recorded on the cheap – often in his parents’ basement in the wild prairies of Saskatchewan. He’s already released a couple of albums, issued on tiny Canadian labels with no distribution in Europe, but this could be his moment. He has just signed to ANTI-, home to Tom Waits, Wilco and Neko Case, and he’s every bit as impressive as, say, Tobias Jesso Jr. He’s touring the UK in April and May with the Lumineers, although we won’t hold that against him.

Neko Case, el country més indie

Neko Case va néixer als EUA, però és canadenca d’adopció. El passat any formà part del cartell del Primavera Sound i avui serà a la sala Apolo per presentar-nos el seu nou disc de llarg títol The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You. Aquest nou disc manté el so country alternatiu que ha caracteritzat la seva sòlida tajectòria. Neko Case és també la cantant de la banda The New Pornographers.
