The muses of La Musa: Momma

Following Momma’s beloved 2020 LP Two of Me, which introduced the world to the symbiotic writing style and profound creative intuition of founders Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten, the band’s third studio album Household Name reveals an exciting new chapter marked by both personal and artistic growth. Mastered by Grammy-winning engineer Emily Lazar, the album is a tightly-stitched collection that is magnetic and dynamic, and also marks their debut for Polyvinyl Record Co./Lucky Number—who signed Momma in the midst of the pandemic.

Bygone heroes helped inspire a lyrical theme throughout Household Name: the rise and fall of the rock star, and the tropes and tribulations that come with that arc. The theme allowed the group to celebrate (and, in some cases, directly reference) icons like Nirvana, Pavement, Smashing Pumpkins, Veruca Salt, and the Breeders’ Kim Deal, while weaving in their own perspective and experiences. The album perfects a balance of heavy riffs, deep emotions, inviting sonic production, and a lighthearted, wry sense of humor, creating a singular lane for Momma in today’s world of alt rock.

Divus Julius presents: Dehd

A musical trio. A line-up that has produced great music in the past, like Nirvana, the Beastie Boys or Motörhead. And now there’s Dehd: three indie rocking friends from Chicago’s DIY scene that adore reverb-drenched guitars, dreamy pop and meandering post-punk rhythms. They can’t wait to showcase their new record ‘Blue Skies’ under a blue Pukkelpop sky.

Best Covers: Glass Animals ‘Heart-Shaped Box’

A brilliant example of an artist making an iconic tune their own, Glass Animals’ Dave Bayley shared this haunted version of the Nirvana ballad as part of a series of Quarantine Covers. The looping music box tinkle takes the place of guitars, turning on an endless axis as Bayley sings the lyrics in a soft tone that evokes the cotton candy vibe of the Dreamland album that would follow.

The muses of La Musa: MARINA

Marina Lambrini Diamandis is a Welsh-Greek singer, known professionally as MARINA (previously Marina & the Diamonds). Diamandis’ musical style ranges from keyboard-based ballads to more up-tempo new wave-style songs with full band backing. She has cited a wide range of influences such as Daniel Johnston, Blondie, Patti Smith, Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Elliott Smith, Dolly Parton, Britney Spears and Madonna.

MARINA released this year her fifth album the acclaimed ‘Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land’

4Ever Songs: Nirvana ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’

Smells Like Teen Spirit is THE Nirvana song. It’s the ultimate grunge anthem, the filler of a million indie club dancefloors.

Released as a single on 10 September 1991, the track was the trailer for the mammoth Nevermind album, released later that month. Smells Like Teen Spirit became a HUGE anthem and propelled this up and coming Seattle trio into the stratosphere. The song became the calling card for Generation X – a nihilistic, revolutionary call-to-arms that was… nothing of the sort.

Seriosament, Andrew Bird
