Festival Cruïlla 2018

The eclectic Cruïlla music festival is a favourite for locals in the Barcelona summer festival season, and it celebrates its ninth year running on July 12, 13 and 14 in the Parc del Fòrum with a line-up of some 40 performances featuring all kinds of musical styles, and featuring veterans as well as up-and-comers.

One of the headliners is the great David Byrne, who not only was the frontman for the legendary Talking Heads but has also enjoyed an extensive and fruitful solo career and is one of the first English-speaking stars to open up his sound to include Latin and African rhythms. Fans of rock rooted in Americana are excited about the addition of Jack White to the line-up, with his third solo album, ‘Boarding House Reach’ (2018), and of bluesman Seasick Steve. For fans of rap and urban music, don’t miss The Roots, N*E*R*D (Pharrell Williams among them), Prophets of Rage (the supergroup made up of members of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, Chuck D and DJ Lord Public Enemy, plus B-Real from Cypress Hill), and British outfit Bugzy Malone, showing off the harder side of hip hop.

Electronic music fans won’t be disappointed either with the French duo Justice, British duo Orbital, drum & bass duo Chase & Status, and Norwegian producer Kygo.

Look forward to roots music from Brazil’s Gilberto Gil, Fatoumata Diawara from Mali, and American reggae band Soja. In addition to Diawara, Cruïlla’s other important female voices are English singer-songwriter Jessie Ware, and French musician Camille, who’s comfortable with both pop and the avant-garde and whatever lies between.

Reggae heir Damian ‘Jr. Gong’ Marley is back at the festival after his 2015 performance, and now he presents his latest album, ‘Stony Hill’ (2017); Colombian duo Bomba Estéreo, one of the most internationally well-known groups on the new wave of alternative Latin American pop also takes to the stage.

More locally, Spanish and Catalan performers include Núria Graham, The New Raemon, Mi Capitán, Belako, La Pegatina, Els Catarres, La M.O.D.A., the Always Drinking Marching Band, Lori Meyers, Elefantes, Blaumut, Ramon Mirabet and Joan Dausà, Madrid’s Izal with their epic pop, and from nearby Vic Joana Serrat.

Completing the line-up are LP, the alias of American singer-songwriter Laura Pergolizzi; English singer-songwriter Ben Howard; New York rock band The Last Internationale; and Peruvian folk-pop group We the Lion; as well as Fura dels Baus and Aquelarre de Cervera, who add a stage-performance ingredient to the festival cocktail.

La cova de Núria Graham

La jove vigatana Núria Graham, que va cridar l’atenció de tothom amb la seva demo ‘First tracks’ (2013), que li va obrir les portes del folk més delicat i detallista segueix defensant el seu magnífic debut, ‘Bird eyes’ (2015), un disc de rock de perfil clàssic que Graham transforma en alguna cosa pròpia i intransferible i ha tingut continuació el 2016 amb el seu últim EP, ‘In the cave’ (2016), que inclou la versió gravada d’un dels seus clàssics en directe, la intensa versió del ‘Toxic’ de Britney Spears. Festival Mil·leni la presenta aquesta nit a El Molino.

7 songs for an endless night

Després de consolidar-se com un dels grans noms de l’escena pop a Catalunya, Mazoni sorprèn tornant als seus orígens amb un disc íntegrament en anglès i de marcat caràcter vitalista i noctàmbul, ‘7 songs for an endless night’ (2016). A més, ho fa sota la producció de Brendan Lynch, mà dreta d’artistes com Brendan Lynch o Primal Scream. I amb una col·laboració vocal de luxe: Núria Graham. Els acompanyaran l’energia juvenil de Cala Vento. Aquesta nit a Razzmatazz dins del festival Curtcircuit.

El Desconcert

L’emissora musical online iCat està d’aniversari i ho volen celebrar amb tots nosaltres amb una gran festa a la Sala Apolo. Amb el nom de El Desconcert han muntat una festa on una vintena de músics de l’escena catalana interpretaran en format karaoke cançons d’altres artistes amb banda en directe. Hi participaran: Quimi Portet, Lluís Gavaldà, Roger Mas, Helena Miquel, The New Raemon, Guillamino, Mazoni, Sanjosex, Joana Serrat, Xarim Aresté, Joan Colomo, Ernest Crusats (La Iaia), Caïm Riba, Le Petit Ramon, Pau Vallvé, Núria Graham, Miquel Àngel Landete (Senior i el Cor Brutal), Pere Jou (Quart Primera), Miguel Ángel Blanca (Manos de Topo), Inspira i CARLA.

Atzucac: Mazoni “Never push a sailor”

Mazoni ha publicat el seu nou disc, “7 songs for an endless night”, amb què retorna a l’anglès de la mà del productor Brendan Lynch, col·laborador habitual de Paul Weller o Primal Scream. En el disc hi participa tota la formació habitual de Mazoni, amb Aleix Bou, Miquel Sospedra, Guillermo Martorell acompanyant Jaume Pla. A més, Núria Graham col·labora posant la veu a “Never push a sailor”, cançó que Divus Julius Bonasera ha triat com a atzucac de la setmana.  Una cançó amb un so mancusià i que és tot un pas endevant en la carrera de Mazoni. El 23 d’abril a l’Antiga Fàbrica Damm.

El dia Minimúsica s’instal·la al CCCB

Després de tres edicions a la Fabra i Coats, el dia Minimúsica s’instal·la al CCCB amb una oferta de concerts i activitats més àmplia que mai. Joan Miquel Oliver, Los Fresones Rebeldes, Los Carradine, Núria Graham, Los Tiki Phantoms o El Comidista DJs són només algunes de les propostes de la nova edició del festival. Als concerts s’afegirà tota una paleta d’activitats, tallers i jocs que barregen el lúdic i creatiu amb l’educatiu. Cuina, ciència, art, tecnologia, esport, manualitats i performance seran les línies temàtiques d’aquestes activitats que se sumaran a una oferta de serveis adaptats al públic familiar.

Pardals: CARLA

Vic darrerament és bressol de bona música. Artistes com La Iaia, Núria Graham o Joana Serrat són vigatans. Una de les últimes troballes és precisament la germana de Joana Serrat, CARLA debuta amb el disc ‘Night thoughts’ (2016), un projecte que es mou entre el synthpop analògic, el trip-pop, el drum’n’bass, el bass soul britànic i una electrònica suggeridora. Veu intensa, sintetitzadors evocadors, loops i percussió orgànica. Avui serà a la Universitat de Barcelona dins del cicle els vespres d’hivern. CARLA és el nostre “pardal” d’aquesta setmana.
