OutKast’s blend of gritty Southern soul, fluid raps, and the low-slung funk of their Organized Noize production crew epitomized the Atlanta wing of Hip Hop’s rising force, the Dirty South, during the mid to late ’90s.
Andre 3000 composed the track in 1999 and was even going to include it on Stankonia (2000), but the recording had to be postponed. The song had several working titles, including Thank God for Mom and Dad (“Thank God for mom and dad”).
Genesis Owusu has the smile of someone who eats fruit directly from the tree, who laughs at bad jokes because they know they are bad and, above all, who knows that their happiness comes from making others happy. Good Time, Don’t Need You, Wit ’Da Team, and WUTD are serotonin pop. Although the Ghanaian-Australian Kofi Owusu-Ansah does not live on funk bubbles alone. On his album Smile With No Teeth, there is also electro-rap, hot ballads, all-embracing falsettos, open-minded hip-hop or pop-rock for those who consider that Prince, Outkast, The Roots, Cody ChessnuTT and Blood Orange were also in their own way pop-rock. Be that as it may, in whatever style you fancy dressing up Genesis Owusu in, his smile breaks through.
After returning earlier this year with ‘GTFO’, Multi-ARIA award-winning artist Genesis Owusu has shared his latest single, ‘Get Inspired’, ahead of his support slot for Tame Impala’s current Australian tour.
Mestre Bergman headed this time to Detroit to meet Gosh Pith. With a keen ability to mesh together a seemingly random sounds (ranging from classic pop structures to modern underground hip hop tunes), songwriting duo Gosh Pith has quickly earned a name in the indie blogosphere. Josh Freed and Josh Smith spontaneously formed Gosh Pith after taking a psychedelic stroll through the streets of Paris. Their atypical inception is the basis of their sound: experimental “cosmic-trap” that’s both refreshing and a little familiar (they list Otis Redding, Outkast, and Little Richard as some of their influences). Gosh Pith has just released an Ep called Window.
