“West End Girls” is a journey through the club scene in London, where Pet Shop Boys Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe spent many evenings. The glamorous West End is where the action was, contrasting with the rougher East End. This was the breakout hit for Pet Shop Boys, a global smash that went to #1 in both America and their native UK. The hit version, thought, wasn’t released until a year after the original.

Hit of the week: New Order ‘Be a Rebel’
New Order have released their first new single in five years titled “Be A Rebel.” The track was initially scheduled to drop prior to their Unity Tour with Pet Shop Boys this fall, but those dates have been postponed to fall 2021.
Introducing…Nation of Language
The Brooklyn-based trio has made a very ’80s splash on their debut album “Introduction, Presence,” with many songs not out of place if they were on “The Breakfast Club” soundtrack. And yet it also sounds utterly fresh.
There are clear echoes on the excellent 10-track collection of New Wave icons like New Order, Depeche Mode, Erasure, The The, Yazoo and Pet Shop Boys, but also more than a hint of The National.
Nation of Language is made up of vocalist Ian Devaney, his keyboardist-wife Aidan Devaney and bassist Michael Sui-Poi. They combine to create spare song architectures and smartly avoid the silly flourishes that made some ’80s-era music dated.

Best Covers: Pet Shop Boys ‘Go West’
‘Go West’ was released as a single on September 6, 1993. It is the song they originally chose to cover at their Hacienda concert the previous year. “I was at home in my flat”, recalls Chris, “playing, as I often do, The Village People’s Greatest Hits album and I thought ‘Go West’ would be a good song to play at a Derek Jarman event, a song about an idealistic, gay utopia. The video, which combines footage filmed in Moscow’s Red Square with an oblique tribute to A Matter of Life And Death, finds them in a new set of costumes: Neil in blue, Chris in yellow, and both of them wearing blue-and-yellow domes on their heads.
Hit of the week: The Rhythm Method ‘Chin Up’
Paying homage to the World Cup songs that have held their own against time, the London-duo’s latest single is an anthem crossing between New Order and Pet Shop Boys – a combination made for a winner, and that’s what this single does. With a light hearted comedic touch, ‘Chin Up’ successfully captures the nostalgic sing-a-longs, shout-a-longs and brings home the patriotism which seemingly peaks every four years.
Releasing the music video on the same day, the cut features members of Wolf Alice and Swim Deep, as well as capturing the heart of British culture, the love of Football.
Cruïlla 2017
El festival Cruïlla, un dels festivals de referència de l’estiu a la ciutat, celebrarà la seva vuitena edició els dies 7 i 8 de Juliol al Parc del Fòrum apostant com sempre per un cartell eclèctic al marge de barreres estilístiques.
Després d’una primera tongada d’artistes anunciats, el Cruïlla ha confirmat les actuacions de Jamiroquai, que presentarà el seu nou disc en el que serà l’únic concert a Espanya de Jay Kay; Pet Shop Boys, que presentaran en directe ‘Super’ (2016); a més dels directes de The Prodigy, Two Door Cinema Club, Die Antwoord, Ryan Adams, Little Steven & The Disciples of Soul (projecte de Steven Van Zandt), Ani Difranco, Residente (meitat de Calle 13), el pioner de l’electro-swing Parov Stelar (si el seu nom no us sona els seus ‘hits’ segur que sí), la francesa Jain (autora de l’èxit televisiu ‘Come’), i AronChupa (factòtum d”I’m an Albatraoz’).
Pel que fa als artistes estatals, destaquen Txarango, Exquirla (el nou projecte que uneix el ‘cantaor’ Niño de Elche i el grup de rock instrumental Toundra), Enric Montefusco, La Raíz, Dorian, Nicola Cruz, El Petit de Cal Eril, Pau Vallvé, Carlos Sadness, Neuman i Oques Grasses, entre d’altres.
S’afegeixen als ja confirmats The Lumineers, banda de Denver convertida en una de les referències de la nova Americana i que presentarà el seu segon disc, ‘Cleopatra’ (2016); Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, que porten 25 anys com una de les bandes més importants del rock en espanyol; Youssou N’Dour, figura clau de la música africana, l’alemany Patrice, creador del Sweggae, presentant el seu nou disc, ‘Life’s blood’ (2016) o l’MC Kase.O, que torna al Cruïlla per presentar nou disc, ‘El Círculo’.
El Cruïlla manté també la seva oferta de concerts més llargs que l’estàndard dels festivals, 90 minuts per als caps de cartell i 60 minuts per a la resta d’artistes i grups.
