Many records, really too many, claim to be the “most personal” work of their respective authors. A stereotype like any other except for Both, Okay Kaya’s debut. Listening to it feels like sitting with its author, Kaya Wilkins, for a whole night. Looking deep, right into her eyes. This sweet treatment of nocturnal folk, which at moments is close to R&B, is a journey that dives into the interior of this Norwegian who shows an endlessly deep, penetrating look. Being signed to a renowned label in 2015, Wilkins discarded two years’ worth of songs because she didn’t want to lose control of her songs, and she retreated to her home, alone only with the occasional help from her partner, Aaron Maine from Porches. This is why Both is a record where she opens herself about her conflicts (the racial, sexual and mental ones -Wilkins is bipolar-) with overwhelming frankness, vulnerability and intimacy. A truly personal album.
Porches is the project of New York singer and composer Aaron Maine. His music perfectly combines indie music sensibility and brilliant eighties’ synth-pop. He self-released his first EPs – ‘Je T’aime,Summer Of Ten‘ and ‘Scrap And love Songs Revisited’ – almost simultaneously. His debut full-length effort ‘Slow Dance in The Cosmos‘ came out in 2013, but he gained international recognition with ‘Pool’, released in 2016.
In ‘Pool’, Porches becomes more sophisticated and joins the club of exotic instrumentation (with Greta Kline from Frankie Cosmos playing bass). His signature sensual and melancholic mood is also present in their latest effort, ‘The House’(2018).
Porches, the band of Aaron Maine, has announced his third full-length album, The House, which comes on the heels of 2016’s Pool and Water EP. He also also debuted a new song and video for “Find Me,” a jaunty, mid-tempo number that contrasts the measured restraint of his recent song, “Country.” The House drops on January 19 from Domino.
Pavo Pavo is about to release their debut album on November 11 under Bella Union Records – it will be entitled ‘Young Narrator In The Breakers.’ This is a group of young but extremely competent musicians who worked closely with indie and classical heavyweights such as Here We Go Magic, John Zorn, Dave Longstreth, Porches, Olga Bell, Lucius, Roomful of Teeth, and San Fermin. The record was co-produced by Danny Molad (Lucius) and Sam Cohen (Yellowbirds, Apollo Sunshine), so expectations should be high.
