Classical yet modern, grounded yet otherworldly, both Kelsey Lu and the music she creates defy easy categorisation. She is a classically trained cellist and her output today is a unique fusion of everything from jazz to contemporary pop, blues to 1970s folk: her friends call her singular style “Lu-thereal”. She has collaborated with Skrillex, Dev Hynes, Sampha and Solange Knowles, all while forging a career as a determined and uncompromising solo artist.
Kelsey Lu has dropped her stunning new track, ‘Morning Dew’. Her first release since last year’s debut album ‘Blood’, it features saxophone from Isaiah Barr from Onyx Collective and was penned while Lu was living in an old leather factory in Hoboken New Jersey.
Hot Chip have announced a new album, called A Bath Full Of Ecstasy, that will be out in June. It’s their first album since 2015’s Why Make Sense?, and it’s their first album that they recruited outside producers to work with them, namely Philippe Zdar (Cassius, Phoenix) and Rodaidh McDonald (the XX, David Byrne, Sampha).
They’ve dropped a music video for lead single “Hungry Child,” which was directed by Saman Kesh and stars Freaks And Geeks’ Martin Starr and This Is Us’ Milana Vayntrub as a couple having a spat before getting entranced by the new Hot Chip single. It turns out that “Hungry Child” has taken over the whole world, and no one can stop hearing it.
Florence + The Machine and their epic sound are back in Barcelona to present their fourth album, ‘High as Hope’ (2018), the majority of which was written composed and recorded by Florence Welch herself, and finished up in Los Angeles along with producer Emilie Haynie. This album also features collaborations with Jamie xx, Kamasi Washington, Sampha, Tobias Tess Jr. and Kelsey Lu. This time around you’ll see a more transparent Florence, singing unreservedly about her fears. Tonight at Palau Sant Jordi.
Cellist and singer Kelsey Lu‘s experimental, labyrinthian music has spellbound listeners and earned her admiration and collaborations with some of biggest names in pop and R&B — Solange, Sampha, Florence And The Machine, Dev Hynes, and more. Lu’s latest track, released today, is technically a cover, but her version makes you forget all about the original. Lu’s version of 10cc’s yacht-rock classic “I’m Not In Love” is gorgeous and sprawling. It’s a showcase for Lu’s voice, which is excellent, and sometimes under-appreciated amid the praise for her cello wizardry. Lu co-directed the dreamy, DIY-aesthetic video for the song with artist Alima Lee.
Taking to the keys across the nation, Sampha twisted and shifted Drake’s latest stormer ‘Controlla’, turning it into a distinctly Sampha creation that sounds like it’s been plucked right out of his own scrapbook.
