Whether she’s making music, acting, or writing, Jehnny Beth challenges conventions, her audience — and herself. Her unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries first became widely known during her time with Savages, whose acclaimed albums Silence Yourself (2013) and Adore Life (2016) delivered a jolt of uncompromising feminine energy into post-punk as well as the U.K. rock scene of the 2010s. When that band took a break, Beth’s horizons broadened. Her searing, sexually liberated 2020 debut album, To Love Is to Live, added touches of jazz, industrial music, and torch songs to her repertoire, while her film roles and books proved she could be equally provocative and riveting in just about any medium.

They are a project that you should listen to almost by obligation. For fans of Savages, Clinic, This Heat, Liars, Deerhoof, Sebadoh, Echo & The Bunnymen or Pavement. We go back even further to see the flavors of bands from the 80s like Joy Division, The Church, or The Fall. They pick up their sober and dark style and place it today.
Mestre Bergman travelled to Turkey to discover a new band. Istanbul band The Away Days released two singles from their debut album (due out in 2017) earlier this year, along with playing their first European headline tour. It’s dream pop that draws influences from India and the far east as well as the likes of Joy Division, The Smiths and the La’s, and has attracted support from Savages, Belle & Sebastian, and Everything Everything.
La Musa spent last week a great time at Primavera Sound and met Savages. If “Silence Yourself”, their 2013 debut was a crushing demonstration of power and a stampede of uncut postpunk, Savages have outdone themselves with “Adore Life”, a confrontational, edgy steamroller with which the London quartet has taken their violent and harsh revision of the fiercest punk to the limit. After only four years, the band formed by Ayse Hassan, Fay Milton, Gemma Thompson and Jenny Beth has already reached a degree of intensity that few bands can emulate of which their live performances, like the one in February 2014 in the Apolo in Barcelona, are the living proof- something that you can out at their concert during the festival.
Primavera Sound desvela el cartell per a la seva pròxima edició, la programació de la qual es desenvoluparà principalment al Parc del Fòrum de Barcelona del dimecres 1 al dissabte 4 de juny i es veurà complementada per un gran nombre de concerts en diferents espais del barri del Raval, fet que estendrà l’oferta musical al llarg de tota una setmana. Més de 150 bandes i artistes que brillaran amb llum pròpia i poblaran amb una infinitat de gèneres musicals un programa on hi haurà de tot i per a tothom.
La presentació del nou disc dels britànics Radiohead, la tornada als escenaris dels novaiorquesos LCD Soundsystem, liderats per James Murphy, la presència d’una icona del rock de la mida de PJ Harvey, la tornada al festival en el cim de la seva carrera dels australians Tame Impala i el rock somiador i experimental dels islandesos Sigur Rós són els noms més visibles d’un cartell estel·lar.
El pop retro futurista del duo francès Air, l’aliança d’Alex Turner i Miles Kane a bord de The Last Shadow Puppets, Brian Wilson desgranant al complet “Pet Sounds”, obra magna de Beach Boys, el dream pop dels americans Beach House, dos shows diferents dels britànics Suede, l’experimentació d’Animal Collective, un dels primers directes del llegendari mag del terror John Carpenter, el post rock d’Explosions In The Sky, la tornada als escenaris dels pioners de hardcore Drive Like Jehu, l’etno pop de Beirut, el noise rock dels mítics Dinosaur Jr., el classicisme de Richard Hawley o un dels grups clau de la música independent actual, Deerhunter, són altres dels plats forts d’aquesta setzena edició.
A més, el math rock de Battles, l’autora d’un dels discos més destacats del passat 2015 Julia Holter, el rock cuirassat de Savages, Dan Bejar a bord de Destroyer desgranant “Poison Season”, l’indie pop de Daughter, el synthpop dels puixants Chairlift, l’electrònica pop de Neon India i molt més artistes. El Primavera ja és aquí!

Entrevistarem a Jordi Comellas, director del Zoom Festival que tindrà lloc aquesta setmana a Barcelona. El mestre Bergman analitzarà la nova cançó de Coldplay i ens endinsarem en la nova minisèrie de la BBC “Guerra i Pau”.
Aquesta nit a partir de les 21.45h la sala barcelonina Apolo dóna la benvinguda a una de les bandes revelació de 2013: les britàniques Savages. Provenen de Londres, tot i que la seva cantant és francesa, i en només uns mesos s’han convertit en un dels grups a seguir del moment. El seu so remet als grans del post punk britànic i el seu àlbum de debut Silence Yourself va ser rebut com un manà, es va situar ràpidament entre els més venuts a UK i ara està apareixent molt alt a les llistes del millor de l’any a un gran número de revistes i webs especialitzades.
