The early 80s was a golden age for pop duos: OMD, Soft Cell, Associates, Tears for Fears, Blancmange, Yazoo, Cabaret Voltaire, Wham! With their homoerotic image and Nazi-baiting lyrics, Gabi Delgado-López and Robert Görl were synth-disco rebels bent on pulverising the rulebook.
DAF (standing for Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft, which means German-American Friendship) actually started out in Düsseldorf. Only with their third album, 1981’s Alles Ist Gut, did they cement their identity as an electronic duo.
Soft Cell are back with a brand new song, ‘Northern Lights’, their first in 15 years. The synthpop icons, comprised of Marc Almond and Dave Ball, have released the new track ahead of their farewell show at London’s O2 Arena next month. Almond described the track as “a celebration of our roots in northern soul.” The track’s lyrics also refer the Northern Soul movement – including references to Stoke’s iconic Golden Torch club and Manchester’s Twisted Wheel.

. American singer Gloria Jones was the first one to record “Tainted Love,” which was written and produced by Ed Cobb. It was released as the B-side to “My Bad Boy’s Comin’ Home” in 1965, but it wasn’t until the early seventies that the song caught on when a U.K. DJ gave it some love because it fit with the Northern Soul thing happening there. Jones rerecorded “Tainted Love” in 1976 with her boyfriend, Marc Bolan (of T. Rex), producing. She was also driving the car in the accident that killed Bolan on September 16, 1977. . English duo Soft Cell‘s 1981 synthpop version is the one that made this tune famous. It charted numerous times in the early 80s.
The Clash, Undertones, The Buzzcocks i The Cramps. Imelda May tocarà avui a la Sala Apolo.
