Music by Bergman: Broken Bells

As ringleader of The Shins, James Mercer has left a busload of bandmates on the hard shoulder over the past two decades. His longest lasting act must be Broken Bells, this occasional project with best mate Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton. The duo’s first two albums established a pattern of flirting convincingly with various genres (new wave, folk, prog, post-punk) before ghosting them entirely. Impressive, but weirdly hard to enjoy. Into the Blue, their third album,  is similarly promiscuous, but more frequently dazzling.

Divus Julius presents…Husky

Hit of the week: Beck “Wow”

Beck has officially shared his new single “Wow”. The track is taken from his upcoming as-yet-untitled album, due out on October 21st through Capitol Records. It features production from Greg Kurstin (Sia, The Shins).

On “Wow”, Beck taps into his hip-hop meets folk roots, bringing the bars as well as a cool, fun sense of swagger. Over a rumbling, rubbery beat and siren-like effects, the songwriter talks demons, jewels, and “getting loose with the luminous moves.”

“The song is about the moments in life that leave you in awe of the world,” wrote videographer/photographer Alicia Ward, one of the many creatives tasked with fashioning a promotional clip for Beck and Capitol Records. Other creatives who helped Beck include illustrator Nathan Jurevicius, ceramic craftsman Eric Landon, and graphic designer Andrew Kuttler.

Productora de Pardals: Eagulls

Two years ago the Leeds band Eagulls released their excellent self-titled debut album, a jaggedly noisy post-punk LP with varying degrees of shoegaze euphoria creeping in from the edges. Now they’re back with a forthcoming 2nd LP called Ullages. Eagulls are morphing into something cleaner and more approachable. The echo-chamber aggression has given way to a sparkling sonic environment situated somewhere between The Cure, The Smiths, The Shins, and Stone Roses. It’s a lovely development, and you can check it out below.
